Wednesday the 8th saw the first game day this year in which both the 1st and 2nd team had games, away to St Andrews and Heriot Watt respectively.
Both squads have benefitted from lots of new faces at trails and the starting line ups were really strong. At St Andrews the team started well going 1-0 up after only 10 minutes when a mistake from the Saints keeper was pounced on by Katie Cleland for her first Edinburgh Uni goal! Edinburgh were in control for the majority of the first half and were playing some fantastic football when they added another 2 goals from freshers Nicola Mawson and Grete Wilson. On the stroke of half time St Andrews pulled a goal back after a through ball wasn’t dealt with resulted in a lofted shot far post, 3-1 to Edinburgh. The second half was far more contested from St Andrews and their pressure reaped reward when a scramble at the back made it 3-2 and shortly after 3-3! Edinburgh fought straight back and Cleland finished well from the edge of the box to make it 4-3 with 15 to go. However the momentum swung in favour of St Andrews and they drew level again! Edinburgh, with most of the possession in the final 10 minutes looked to capitalise on this but couldn’t find the back of the net, final score 4-4. Man of the match went to Nicola Maswon.
Back in Edinburgh the 2nds lined up against Heriot Watt for the first time this year and with Jade Currie having 6 goals to her name in the last 2 games the team felt positive in taking all 3 points. Currie was instrumental in the first goal after only 5 minutes her corner fell to Jodie Ovens at the back post and was slotted in. With the majority of possession Edinburgh capitalised and Currie scored after a good team play through the midfield. 2-0 at halftime. Edinburgh continued to apply pressure with both Lily Chubb and Currie hitting the woodwork early into the second half. Heriot Watt held off Edinburgh attacks until 65 minutes when Currie scored 2 goals in quick succession, her second hat trick on the trot! Edinburgh played out the game well and it finished 4-0. A convincing win taking all 3 points and moving to the top of the Scottish 3A League with 2 wins from 2. Man of the match went to Jade Currie.
Next week sees a break in games for both teams but the title race continues on the 22nd with a double header down at Peffermill vs Stirling 1st and 2nd teams. Get down to support EUWAFC or follow the games on our Twitter @EUWAFC!
