Wednesday the 6th saw our 1st team clash with Glasgow University for the first time this season. Edinburgh fielded one of their strongest starting 11s of the season and coming off the back of a 5-1 win away to RGU last week the team were confident. Edinburgh saw most of the ball in the first 10 minutes and pressed high trying to get the early goal. Brilliant play from Allison Low on the wide forced a mistake from Glasgow defence allowing Katy Cleland to pounce and calmly slotted pasted the advancing keeper! Glasgow immediately responded and won back to back corners but brave defending from Edinburgh and Lucy Stanton in particular kept the score at 1-0.Edinburgh dominated the midfield with McAvoy, Wilson and Mawson linking up well but the second goal didn’t materialise before half time.
The second half started and Glasgow stepped up their efforts but this didn’t stop Cleland rounding the keeper after a great through ball but the angle was too tight and the cross was cleared! The play was end to end and Glasgow had a great chance to equal after a striker was through one to one but Ferguson held her ground and the effort was just wide. Pressure was on Edinburgh and an unfortunate own goal from a corner levelled the scores. With less than 25 minutes to go Edinburgh were throwing everything they had at Glasgow but to no avail! Head Coach Mike Ross made 5 changes bringing on Robertson, Haines, Murdy, Keating and McNeill to add fresh legs and really push for the winner! A few chances came Edinburgh’s way but the ball just wouldn’t hit the back of the net! Final score 1-1, a frustrating point for the players to take after such a valiant effort from everyone. After all the 1A League results Edinburgh now sits in 3rd.
The club now looks forward to our Scottish Student Cup games on the 15th November away to Stirling and Glasgow Caledonian as well as the 2nds BUCS fixture on Wednesday the 12th.
