First Team show great ‘bouncebackability’

The first team bounced back from last week’s defeat to Gala with a double success.

Following the second half capitulation of the previous week, the students took on Abertay in the BUCS 1A needing a win to stand any chance of winning the Scottish University League. The Uni were dominant throughout, emerging victorious with goals from Jack Guthrie (2), Dan Ward and a first for the first team for Bertie Collins – result 4-2.

The 1s followed this up with an impressive win and performance against Threave in the Lowland League. Needing a win to stay clear of the bottom two, the Uni started brightly and finished the first half two to the good. The first was the result of a Ross Patterson corner which was cleared to the edge of the box. The ball found the evergreen Georgi Nikolaidis who brought the ball down expertly and drilled home, via a slight deflection, into the corner of the net.

A second soon followed when the Uni midfield fought hard and won the ball back in their own half. A good passing move ended at the feet of Nikolaidis who fed a through ball to Aitken. Aitken cut in on the right and smashed the ball through the keeper’s near post -2-0.
Any thoughts of another second half collapse were dispelled early in the second half. MacFarlane lobbed a free kick into the Threave box from halfway and found Jack Guthrie at the back post. Guthrie took once touch and passed the ball in left footed from twelve yards for his 13th goal of the season.
Threave later managed to pull a consolation, when a freekick was superbly delivered from the left and headed into the far right corner of the Uni net.
The Uni will be looking to build on this on Saturday when they entertain Preston Athletic on, 3pm Kick Off at Peffermill.

Further good news this week from the first team came in the form of three players being selected for the Scottish University training squad this week. Captain Duncan Black, midfielder Dan Ward and striker Jack Guthrie have all been selected. First team boss Dorian Ogunro has also been asked to assist as a Coach for the coming season. Everyone at the Club wishes you all the very best, and hopes you can all make your mark at international level – well done!
