Match Report 14/10/15
1s vs St Andrews 1s (A) 5-2
3s vs Stirling 2s (Conference Cup H) 1-6
This week it was Edinburgh 1s who were making the trip to play St Andrews 1s who went into the game
confident after their 2-0 win over Glasgow the week previous. The two sides had faced off against one another in a preseason game where the Edinburgh side came out on top but it was clear from the outset that this was going to be a tough game for both sides. There was nothing between the two teams in the opening twenty minutes of the game but soon St Andrews got a break and after a scramble in the box the ball saw the back of the net putting St Andrews 1-0 up. Edinburgh had the opportunity to level the scoring five minutes before half time when a penalty was awarded after a foul on Beth Macleod. The penalty was well taken but an on form St Andrews keeper guessed right and palmed the ball away from goal. Minutes later St Andrews had a corner and their centre back rose above everyone to head the ball into the net. The home side led 2-0 at half-time. As the second half got underway it was clear the Edinburgh side were not there to be defeated. Half-time substitute Caroline Heron pulled one back for the visiting side minutes into the second half and this was followed by a second not long after when an Edinburgh free kick smacked the cross bar and Heron headed the rebound in. As momentum gathered Edinburgh continued to dominate. They took the lead minutes later when Captain Hannah Craig sent the ball into the box where Heron chested it down and slotted it home. 3-2. And Edinburgh didn’t stop there. Beth Macleod scored Edinburgh’s fourth after some fancy footwork past the St Andrews defence and Hattie Chandler wrapped up the game with an excellent first time finish from a cross ball into the top left hand corner. As the final whistle blew the Edinburgh side celebrated an incredible second half comeback that sees them remain undefeated in the BUCS 1A league. Three more points for EUWAFC 1s this week! The
Edinburgh 3s played a Conference Cup game at home this Wednesday against the Stirling 2s. Although it looked promising shortly after kick-off as Sara took an early shot at Stirling’s goal, the game moved back to Edinburgh’s side of the field and a Stirling player managed to slip through Edinburgh’s defence, getting the ball in the net and making the score 0-1. It looked like the perfect opportunity for Edinburgh to get a goal back as the ball moved swiftly from player to player and ended up at striker Naomi’s feet but a distant offside whistle saw the end of that run. A corner awarded to Stirling led to Edinburgh conceding another goal and the first half ended 0-2. With the second half underway Edinburgh were determined to get a goal back and a beautifully delivered corner met Captain Louisa’s head and was passed on to Laila who sent it flying into Stirling’s goal, making it 1-2 and lifting the spirits of the Edinburgh players. The game ended 1-6 and despite the score, things are looking positive for Edinburgh 3s with some major improvements witnessed on the field.
Next week Edinburgh 1s take on Stirling 1s at Peffermill which is set to be the biggest game of the season. Kick off is 18:30 on the stadium pitch. The 2s will also be in action against Stirling 2s at Peffermill, kick off 14:00. Come along and support EUWAFC!
