2’s suffer first defeat in tight Cup tie

Meadowbank FC 3-2 EUAFC (Challenge Cup) 8/9/18

In the opening quarter the ball was seldom on the dancefloor as bouncing balls and several big tackles set the tone for the game early on. Following a period of pressure from Meadowbank, the home side opened the scoring with a header from a corner ball. However, the response from the uni was quick as a through ball from Luke Pritchard Cairns set his teammate 1 on 1 with the goalie and Arran MacLennan showed great composure and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to equalise the game before half time.

Half time: 1-1

The second half could not have started worse for the Uni as Meadowbank score to go ahead for the second time within the first five minutes. This was shortly followed by a ‘tekkers’ volley within the box, which gave Meadowbank a 2-goal lead on the Edinburgh boys. The next 20 minutes of play was quite scrappy, with a lot of fouls from both sides. There was a glimmer of hope for Edinburgh after a scramble in the box from a corner kick, saw the ball falling nicely for right wing back, Craig McMillan, who blasted it in the net in his last ever game for the Uni. The boys had some promising spells of play after the second goal and a change in formation to a 4-3-3. However, the game finished 3-2 with the Uni being knocked out of the Challenge Cup.

Full time: 3-2

Despite the unfortunate result, there are many positives to take away from the game and there are clear signs of what needs to be worked on at training as the Uni look to improve for their league campaign next week.
