After last weekends disappointing defeat to Stirling University, The 1s went into the South Challenge Cup with a point to prove as they faced East of Scotland side, Oakley United.
The Uni started positively in the opening exchanges and came very close to opening the scoring on the half hour mark through Ross Watters. Patrick Baird won the ball in the middle of the park and played the ball towards Watters to the right side of the box. Watters cut back onto his left foot and drove his shot at goal, but the ball crashed against the post to deny Uni taking the lead.
Just before the half-time whistle, James Conington put the 1s in front. The ball found itself to Max Condie, who laid the ball back to Santeri Kuivalainen on the edge of the box. ‘Santi’ spotted the run of Luke Murray into the box and crossed the ball towards the back post. Murray headed the ball back across goal as Conington got in front of his man and poked the ball home to put the Uni in front.
Half time: 1-0
Oakley came out stronger in the second half, as they forced Mark Tait to make a great block from a one on one five minutes in. Despite the early pressure, the Uni doubled their lead soon afterwards. Baird drove with the ball from the centre of the park towards goal before laying the ball off to Conington who dribbled towards the byline. ‘JC’ cut the ball back into the box to return the ball to Baird who then finished first time past the Oakley keeper to make it 2-0.
Uni kept control for rest of the second half but were given a scare when Oakley hit the bar from a powerful header with ten minutes to go. The 1s held on though as they secured the win and their second clean sheet of the season.
Full time: 2-0
A much-improved performance from the 1st team means the boys progress to the next round of the South Challenge Cup, as they now look forward to their William Hill Scottish Cup fixture against Whitethill Welfare this Saturday.
