Yusuf chip gives Uni a point against East Kilbride

EUAFC 1-1 East Kilbride (SLFL) 1/9/18

Following their midweek draw away to Kelty Hearts, the 1s were back at East Peffermill as they looked to get a good result against current Lowland League leaders East Kilbride.

With the visitors having won all six of their league games this season, the Uni knew they were in for a tough game ahead. And with eleven minutes gone, EK made the breakthrough. The visitors managed to make a quick opening through the middle of the park and slid the ball to their striker into the box who calmly put the ball into the back of the net.

East Kilbride could have doubled their lead minutes later with two great chances. The first opportunity found the league leaders in the Uni box again after a great run into the area, but their resulting shot was blocked by Callum Davison at his near post. The second one saw the visitors break on a counter attack after the Uni lost the ball cheaply, leaving a 3 versus 3 in the box. The ball was cut back to the East Kilbride striker, but his shot was saved by Davison as he got across his line well.

Despite the visitors several chances, the Uni equalised with a brilliant finish from Abdul Yusuf. With the team being pressed high by East Kilbride’s forwards, Mark Gair was forced to go long as he played the ball over the top of the last defender for Yusuf to chase. The Uni frontman managed to tussle off the East Kilbride defender to the ball as he looked towards goal. Seeing the EK goalkeeper off his line, Yusuf cheekily chipped the ball into the goal as the 1s went into half-time all level.

Half time: 1-1

East Kilbride continued to threaten in the second half despite the Uni starting to have a better grip of the game. The Kilby came close again with a low shot towards goal in the box, with Davison having to step a foot out to block. Not long after that chance and EK hit the post with a close range effort to much relief for the 1s.

Despite the visitor’s dominance, The Uni stayed strong in defence and could have taken all three points near the end of the match when Ross Watters drove his shot goalward in the box, but the EK goalkeeper made a good save to keep the ball out.
